Cincinnati Based Sycamore Distilling Takes Top Honors In US Open Whiskey And Spirits Championship

Cincinnati Based Sycamore Distilling Named #3 Grand National Distillery Champion and Brings Home 4 Medals From The US Open Whiskey and Spirits Championship

CINCINNATI - The US Open Whiskey and Spirits Championship have released their 2020 competition results and Cincinnati based Sycamore Distilling has taken home two gold, one silver and one bronze medal as well as the #3 Grand National Distillery Champion spot.

Sycamore Distilling’s flagship product, Ohio Straight Bourbon earned a gold medal in the Straight Bourbon Category. Their other gold was awarded to their Cask Edition Bourbon that was finished in stout barrels that aged parent company March First Brewing’s Imperial Stout. Their American Whiskey took home the bronze in the American Craft Whiskey category and their Voltage Peppermint Schnapps made with peppermint used in Doscher’s Candies candy canes took home the silver.

Judging in the U.S. Open Whiskey and Spirits Championships is blind; the judges know only the categories, but they do not know what they are tasting. The original plans were to judge all entries in Buffalo, New York, since half of the judges were Canadian distillers or instructors at Niagara College Teaching Distillery. Unfortunately, COVID19 happened. Thus, the judging was delayed and occurred in Welland, Ontario and Oxford, Ohio.

“We put in a lot of hard work over the past few years. We are now kicking it into overdrive as we look at opening our standalone distillery in Milford in 2021. Being named best Bourbon in the country shows everyone that we are going to do it bigger and better in the years to come” Sycamore Distilling spokesperson Josh Engel said. “There are a lot of fun products in the pipeline and we cannot wait to share them with the world.”

Sycamore Distilling’s operations are currently co-located at March First Brewing in Sycamore Twp, Ohio. In 2019 they broke ground on a standalone distillery located at the historic corner of Mill and Water streets in Old Milford, Ohio. The distilling complex will include a distilling operations floor, a tasting room, event space, restaurant, a rooftop bar and a museum. The projected opening date is Spring 2021.
